TheÂ&xnbsp;Serval is an African wild cat; it shares ancestors with the lion and common traits with the Cheetah. It is closely related to the African Golden Cat and the Caracal.
Its habitat is the Savanna, melanistic Servals are found in mountainous regions. The melanistic serval has a similar appearance to the black panther. Like the Cheetah, most Servals are friendly, good-natured, easily tamed, and make loving pets. Servals have historically been kept as pets in Africa.
The Serengeti is a completely domesticated outcross, using Bengals, melanistic Bengals and Siamese or Orientals to get the big erect ears, which are so eye-striking for the Serval look. An Oriental is a solid coloured Siamese cat. There is absolutely no wild blood in the Serengeti cat. Other names for the Serengeti are Spoticats or Savannah UK. Savannah US do use Servals, though.
